Man is a meddling creature. Everything we come in contact with is immediately assessed, categorized, and labelled according to our systems. If we can control something, we will. Meddling is such a fundamental part of our nature that we often are unaware of it. Paradoxically, we often rate the natural higher than the artificial.
We are disappointed when a beautiful plant turns out to be plastic, or learn that a beautiful picture was designed on the computer. Nobody likes to live in a city without trees, and many seek out the luxury of organic vegetables and a visit to 'untouched' nature.
But our houseplants, our food, our pets and the green in urban planning have been manipulated to such an extent that the border between nature and artificial becomes unclear. How much of the relationship we have with our environment is artificial? Can we still speak of artificial as an opposite to nature?
